The Agile Mumbai 2024 conference was a great success, bringing together professionals from different sectors—industry leaders, agile coaches, and academia. The event was all about learning, sharing, and making new connections. It gave everyone a chance to dive into real-world discussions on agile practices and how they can be applied.
Being the conference chair was a rewarding experience for me. I had the opportunity to work closely with the program team, agile community, review interesting sessions, and interact with experts from both industry and academia. Building the agenda itself was a huge learning process. It was exciting to see how topics could inspire meaningful conversations and fresh ideas. Meeting new people and exchanging insights made the experience even better.
I found the focus on academia particularly close to my heart, especially with both my children now in higher education. Sessions on education policy and building tomorrow’s institutions felt timely and relevant. It was inspiring to see these topics integrated into discussions around agility and the future of work.
Here are my Top 10 Takeaways from Agile Mumbai 2024:
1. The Future of Engineering and Its Connection to the World
Engineering and the world’s future are tied together. As technology grows, engineering must adapt to sustainability, innovation, and ethics. This relationship shows that future engineering will both shape and be shaped by global changes.
2. Education Needs to Evolve
Indian universities should become more than exam centers; they need to be R&D hubs for industries. Education should focus on critical thinking, digital skills, and lifelong learning to prepare students for an industry-focused future.
3. Human-Centered and Purpose-Driven Solutions
Solutions must focus on human needs. As AI and humans coexist in the workforce, we need to ensure that technology helps society and improves lives. Designing with purpose is key to making a positive impact.
4. Agile Leadership That Focuses on People
Agile leadership should center around people, fostering teamwork, innovation, and empathy. This helps manage complex projects and ensures teams can adapt to change while delivering real value.
5. Balancing Speed and Reflection in Decision-Making
It’s important to find a balance between quick thinking and thoughtful reflection. An agile mindset helps leaders act fast but also reflect wisely to ensure long-term success.
6. Embracing Generational Differences
Generational differences in the workforce are an asset. Accepting and appreciating these differences helps foster collaboration and innovation, making teams stronger and more creative.
7. The Three Hs for Tomorrow’s Workforce
The future workforce needs three key elements: the Head (knowledge), the Heart (ethics and emotional intelligence), and the Hands (skills). This balance is crucial for building well-rounded professionals.
8. Technology’s Impact on Society
While tech advancements like smart cities bring efficiency, we must also address issues like job displacement, inequality, and privacy. Social isolation in a tech-driven world is becoming common, so it’s important to reconnect with people and practice digital detox.
9. Sustainability and Resource Consumption
If we continue consuming and producing like we do today, we’ll need four Earths to sustain our lifestyle. This highlights the need for sustainable practices to reduce environmental damage and preserve resources.
10. Using Mental Models for Better Decision-Making
Many of our decisions are automatic, influenced by biological instincts. By using mental models and practicing self-awareness, we can make more intentional, thoughtful decisions that benefit both individuals and organizations.
The conference offered us a clear view of the future in terms of work, engineering, education, and society. It was good to reflect upon how important it is to adapt, focus on human-centered solutions, and embrace change in a way that balances progress with ethics.
Agile Mumbai 2024 wasn’t just another conference for me — it was a great chance to come together, learn, and push agile practices forward. I’m excited to continue these conversations and build on the momentum we created.
